Nishikori, the first Japanese man through to the last eight in Melbourne for 80 years, won support from kimono-clad fans as the underdog at sun-bathed Rod Laver Arena, but left with his tail between his legs after a two-hour 12-minute spanking.
While rarely setting the court alight, Murray assumed control from the outset, exploiting the flashy Japanese's height with lobs and running him around the court to distraction.
The fourth-seeded Briton stepped up a gear in the third, closing out the contest on his second match point when Nishikori belted a forehand return into the net.
Murray sets up a last-four showdown with either world number one Novak Djokovic or fifth seed David Ferrer as he bids for a maiden Grand Slam title.

The Spain Under-21 international initially joined Spurs on a season-long loan in August and they have now moved to make the move permanent.

Falque has made six appearances for Spurs so far this campaign and Harry Redknapp has decided to loan him out to his old club Southampton so that he can get some regular first-team action under his belt.

Southampton boss Nigel Adkins was delighted to land Falque on loan for the remainder of the season as he looks to maintin their bid for promotion.

Highly-rated

"He's a very exciting player and I'm pleased that we've got him on board and I think the supporters will be excited by what he can do on the pitch," Adkins told the club's official websiet.
"Like many of our players he's a player who can play everywhere and he's someone who can play on the left, on the right and in the number 10 position behind the striker, so he's a talented footballer and one who I'm sure is going to excite everybody.
"They (Tottenham) rate him highly and have loaned him out to ourselves where he will become another addition to the players that we've got to give us that opportunity to get back into the Premier League."
Falque is looking forward to linking up with Southampton as he looks to continue his development.
"I'm very happy to be here at Southampton, and I am looking forward to training with my new teammates who have proved this season that they are very talented.
"I hope that I can help the team to great things this season.
